Chapter News: What does it take to protect our children from child abuse?

Updated: Mar 7, 2021

Experts estimate that about 1 in 8 children are sexually abused before their 18th birthday. So, as a parent how can you help to protect your children from being a victim?

Make Good and Educated Decisions

Making good decisions and educated decisions means that we take the extra time to become knowledgeable about child abuse. Knowing how to spot something is wrong with your child or a stranger. How to take the extra steps to keep your children safe at all times. Local organizations offer free classes all of the time to keep the community and parents all safe. Statistically speaking, 90% of children who are victims of sexual abuse know their abuser. 60% of children who are sexually abused are abused by people the family trust, and 30%of the children who are abused are abused by a family member.

Know the Risks

Making sure you know who your children are with at all times is so important. For example if your out to dinner and your ten year old son or daughter needs to use the restroom. You should always be with them. Situations with pedophiles or abusers are sometimes random and quick. The time it takes to change a child's life isn't worth the few minutes they go off on their own.

Finding Support in Each other

Supporting each other means giving support to others efforts to prevent sexual abuse. Prevention education has been extremely successful in decreasing abuse. For organizations like ourselves who offer classes to help educate others on how to prevent abuse at no cost to you are great ways to help protect your family.
